Industry commitment

At AET, we believe it is important to work alongside the key industry bodies to ensure a consistently high level of quality is maintained throughout our industry.

The classification societies are responsible for ensuring that vessels are designed, built and operated to the highest possible standards of safety and environmental awareness. AET partners with a number of the leading societies to provide vital advice and feedback and actively contributes to the regional and technical committees of Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). Our Deputy Chairman is an elected council member of leading class society ABS.

Mutual protection and indemnity clubs provide the industry with third-party liability insurance – an extremely important service in the event of a seafarer injury or environmental accident. Our directorships of the UK and Gard P&I clubs allow us to contribute to this important area.

Our Deputy Chairman is chair of Intertanko’s Human Element in Shipping committee, which is tasked with improving life at sea for those serving aboard tankers. This committee was responsible for the pioneering Tanker Officer Training Standards (TOTS) project that seeks to raise standards for watchkeepers above and beyond those required by STCW.

AET people also take roles in the US Industry Task Force on Lightering, the Chamber of Shipping of America, Intertanko’s Worldscale committee and participate in the US Coast Guard Ship Rider Programme to give young coast guard recruits a taste of life at sea.

AET is committed to working with suppliers and partners for mutual gain and for the benefit of our industry at large. In 2008, AET trialled Nippon Paints’ new LF-Sea anti-fouling paint, an innovative hull coating that reduces fuel consumption, resulting in lower emissions and cost savings.
