The final vessel in AET’s Eagle H-Class vessel retrofit programme for 2025–26, AET’s Eagle Hydra has completed a series of energy-efficiency retrofits during her recent shipyard stay.
A landmark project, the Eagle Hydra retrofit completes the first full deployment of Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) units in the fleet. AET will scale the application of VFD units on other vessels in the fleet, with four further deployments scheduled in 2026.
VFD installation on Eagle Hydra’s major energy consumers, including engine room ventilation fans and cooling water pumps, is expected to deliver close to 150 tonnes of annual fuel savings and corresponding emissions reduction. Payback from fuel savings is expected in approximately two years.
Alongside the VFD installation, Eagle Hydra has undergone a range of additional energy-efficiency upgrades, including:
● The fifth Propeller Boss Cap Fin (PBCF) installation in AET’s Eagle H-Class fleet for 2025–26, which will improve Eagle Hydra’s propeller efficiency by reducing hub vortex losses.
● X-GIT graphene propeller coating, to reduce propeller surface roughness and friction, contributing to fuel consumption.
● Low-friction hull coating, again to reduce friction and improve performance.
AET’s programme of tier one retrofits, delivered through close collaboration with MISC Marine, the vessel team and our project partners, is extending proven, scalable efficiency measures across the fleet to contribute to achieving AET’s Decarbonisation Strategy.
