As part of our ongoing partnership with Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG), our US colleagues joined the university’s third annual Homeward Bound event on 22 May 2026, marking the official start of the Summer Sea term.

Traditionally, the event celebrates the return of cadets following their Summer Sea Term. This year, however, marks a unique chapter for the university as it awaits the completion of its new training vessel, the Lone Star State. Once completed, the Lone Star State will serve as TAMUG’s dedicated training vessel for future Summer Sea Terms and will also support disaster relief efforts when needed.

In the meantime, Maine Maritime Academy has partnered with TAMUG to bring cadets from both schools together aboard the NSMV STATE OF MAINE for a summer of hands-on training, learning, and growth. The collaboration offers future maritime professionals a valuable opportunity to gain experience and build connections across both institutions.

Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to connect with cadets, explore TAMUG’s new Engineering Classroom and Research Building, and take a private tour of the NSMV STATE OF MAINE. It was a great day filled with excitement and anticipation for the cadets’ summer journey and all that lies ahead for TAMUG.

Corbin Chandler, 2026 Sea Term Commander, said: “The Sail Away Dock Party is one of the most meaningful traditions at TAMUG. Seeing family, friends, and the campus community come together before we depart serves as a reminder of the support behind every cadet and the opportunities that lie ahead at sea.”

We are rooting for these aspiring maritime professionals as they embark on their journeys and help shape the future of the maritime industry.
